Item groups: classifying your stock

Every item must belong to a group, and groups are also the starting point for your online store's categories.

What are item groups?

An item group is the classification you file your stock under — clothing, groceries, spare parts. Every item must have one, and groups are also the basis on which your online store's categories are built.

Where to find it

Inventory → Item Groups, or /dashboard/item-groups.

Permissions: item_group:view to see it, item_group:add to create, item_group:edit to change.

The form

The list is flat

There are no sub-groups. If you need a hierarchy, put it in the names:

Clothing - Men
Clothing - Women
Clothing - Kids

Real multi-level nesting exists in Store Categories for the online store.

The relationship with the online store

When your store is provisioned, Pashkateb seeds the first store categories from your item groups. After that the categories are independent: you can rename, nest and publish them from Commerce → Store Categories without affecting your item groups.

So item groups are your internal organisation, and store categories are what the shopper sees.

Groups created by integrations

When you pull products from Shopify, EasyOrder or Wuilt, the system creates any missing groups automatically and marks them as coming from an integration. They appear in the same list and you can rename them normally.

Tips

  • Keep the number of groups sensible. Twenty useful groups beat a hundred.
  • Groups underpin most stock reports, so getting them right makes those reports worth reading.
  • Disabling a group leaves its items working — the group just stops appearing when you add a new item.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to create groups before items?

Yes. Item group is a required field on the item form, so at least one group has to exist before you can add your first item.

Can groups have sub-levels?

No. Item groups are a flat list with no sub-groups. If you need a hierarchy, use clear names like Clothing - Men and Clothing - Women. It is the online store categories that support nesting.

How do groups relate to store categories?

Store categories are originally seeded from your item groups. So your group structure is the starting point for your store's categories, after which you can edit and publish the categories independently from the Store Categories screen.

If I disable a group, what happens to its items?

The items are unaffected and keep working normally. The disabled group simply stops appearing in the picker when you add a new item.
